COURSE SUMMARY

“Head for the Hills” to play a round on one of the most spectacular and challenging Golf Courses in Queensland.

For male players the Course consists of 2 X Par 5's, 3 X Par 3's and 4 X Par 4's - that's Par 35 with the total length being approximately 3000 meters. For female players there are 3 X Par 5's, 3 X Par 3's and 3 X Par 4's - that's Par 36 with the total length being approximately 2600 meters.

Each of the Fairways has 2 separate Tees. The Tee-to-Green distance may vary up 40 meters and in several cases the Tee-to-Green flightpath is substantially different. The18 Hole numbers are Par 70 (Men) / Par 72 (Ladies) - approximately 6000 meters length for Men and 5200 meters for Ladies.

1. Fairways

Firstly the significant 'ups and downs' of the Fairways, as befits a Course set in the mountains, mean that shot-making is highly variable and more interesting than on Courses with largely flat Fairways. There are almost no level sections in the 'long' or 'cross' profiles of any of the Fairways - almost 100% of ground strokes include one or more of the challenges that come with undulating terrain.

The ball is often above or below foot level and many times your stance will be uphill or downhill - sometimes both on the same shot. Club selection is often challenged by "distance adjustments" for the uphill or downhill terrain - you may need to choose between (say) a "full Wedge shot" or an "easy 9 Iron". Side slopes may require you to assess the direction of the shot - if playing with a Member be ready with some 'local knowledge' comments. There are not a lot of easy, low risk Fairway shots.

All Fairways feature large trees on both edges. On perhaps 50% of the holes the tight Fairway width means that if you "go for distance", expect to find the trees. We have special trees at Tamborine Mountain - they are only "10% air" so getting your Par from the trees will be a challenge

Three (3) of the 9 Greens are protected by sand Bunkers. One has steep faced Bunkers on opposite sides so you'll need a good "out" if your ball lies close to the slope. In any event you will need to consider that the Green has a 'slippery' slope between the two (2) Bunkers.  The smallest Green is bunkered on the high side. From the greenside Bunker lip its just a few meters of Green to the top of a 4 + meter steep slope.  The Bunker on the third Green is relatively straightforward, unless your ball lies at the base of it's 2-3 meter greenside vertical face.

Three (3) of the six (6) Greens without Bunkers are protected, on the fairway side, by steep grass slopes up to the Green. These slopes are ideal for 'plugging' your ball, on longer approach shots. Of course they're also ideal for delivering your ball back down the slope if you don't convincingly make the Green surface.

2. High Quality Greens

Tamborine Greens are surfaced using Creeping Bentgrass - it is the grass of choice for putting greens for any climate in which it can be grown.

Bentgrass has very thin blades, which grow densely. It can be mowed frequently and closely resulting in a felt-like smoothness to the Green surface. Compare the 'cool' Mountain conditions with the hot and humid Gold Coast and coastal Courses. They invariably use Hybrid Bermuda grass because it tolerates the heat, so long as mowing heights are kept on the high side.

With just 1 level Green, your putting skills will be thoroughly challenged by the undulating Tamborine Mountain Greens.

CLUB COMPETITIONS

As a general rule there is a weekly competition for each of the Membership Groups. The Ladies have their day every Tuesday  - the Veterans compete each Wednesday - the Men play every Saturday and the Juniors get their competition on Sundays. The most popular of the weekly Competitions is the Monthly Medal - it has Men, Ladies and Veterans versions. For at least the Men's and Veteran's groups it is hotly contested by Players Grade ("A", "B" and "C" - based on Handicap)..

Management publishes a Competition Schedule annually setting out a day-by-day program of Competitions. To view the current Annual Schedule click here.

FORMATION OF THE CLUB

The documents displayed below show that the Golf Club started its life in close affiliation with the Housing Estate, that borders the South and East sides of the Course - though the record of the discussions is not dated we believe it took place in mid-year 1958.

The documents also give a date of 11th January 1959 for the "Grand Opening" of the Course and a 'Head to Head' between 2 leading Aussie golfers of the day - notice the 'pre-Decimal currency' prize of 50 Pounds. The 'Country Club' element of the property in 1958/9 was also given expression by the construction of Tennis Courts - they have been replaced today, by the Putting Practice area.
